l.a. Eyeworks & Greg Gorman's
Framed: Greg Gorman for l.a. Eyeworks
“A face is like a work of art. It deserves a great frame.” As iconic as this long-running slogan for l.a. Eyeworks are the accompanying black and white portraits of cultural icons captured since 1982 by lensman Greg Gorman for the equally iconic eyewear house.
The ongoing campaign has been a benchmark for both the eyewear world as well as the celebrity endorsement arena. So, too, it's been a badge of pop culture cool for a well-known personality to be invited to be featured in the campaign—not that the humble visionaries behind the frames, Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi, would ever acknowledge this. Rose certainly does in her essay included in the book, along with those by fans Ingrid Sischy and David Fahey. But founders and fans freely raise their glasses to the talent of Greg Gorman, a photographer who has managed to create a signature lexicon with his images of both the stratospherically famous and fabulously fringe alike.
This collectible volume contains 171 faces Greg photographed in these first three decades of the campaign (his work with the company is hardly over!). Greg's images conjure the glamour and mystery of old Hollywood coupled with the idiosyncratic styling that has made l.a. Eyeworks a favorite among design makers since it opened its doors in 1979 on Melrose Avenue. It's the first house of optical design in L.A. and a true champion since then of progressive design and art. FRAMED is an essential reference for fans of design, fashion, Hollywood, photography and advertising.
A+R is thrilled to carry FRAMED, as well as a seasonally curated selection of l.a. eyeworks frames in our Abbot Kinney location.
