Description

Everything seemingly old is rendered new again with this bench by British heritage house Ercol. Hand-crafted without the use of any nails or screws in the Ercol factory outside of London, the bent beech frame bow echoes the essential lines of the Windsor chair. The outward-shaped elm seat is molded for comfort, and the tapered legs are signature to Ercol's Originals series, designed by founder Lucian R. Ercolani.

For a modern twist, the ombré finish was added in recent years. The graded color fades away to a natural wood grain. Even in a solid hue or without any hint of color at all, the minimal silhouette stands alone. It's easy to fall in love with Lucian's design, whether it's pulled up to a dining table or placed on its own in a salon or bedroom.

Ercol was founded was founded in 1920 by a young Italian immigrant to the UK, and since 2002, operates out of a 160,000-square-foot factory in the heart of the traditional Chiltern's furniture-making are which has won several awards for its sound environmental practices and architectural design.

“I am lucky enough to remember Lucian as a very benign grandfather who gave me my first bicycle and, later, taught me the pleasure of drinking Chianti,” says Edward Tadros, current chairman and grandson of Ercol’s founder. “But he was also absolutely instrumental in creating my interest and curiosity in art and design.” He’s speaking of Lucian Ercolani, the icon of British modernism, who founded the company in 1920 after having moved to London from his native Italy.

Best known for its midcentury Originals that are still produced today, Ercol sought to offer a contemporary version of handmade British furniture. Initially, the collection was inspired by classic Windsor styles, a nod to the heritage of Chiltern Hills near the first factory. The “old man” as he is referred to in company lore had made his first piece of furniture in 1907. From that auspicious start, Ercol continues to stand for timeless contemporary design and a continuity of craft.
