Aoyama Dining Table

Description

Danish-French designer Paul Leroy drew inspiration for his artful dining table from the lively Aoyama district in Tokyo, with its many restaurants and shops. He pairs a convivial round tabletop with a spectacular center column in an openwork pattern created out of laser-cut steel-plate. The sense of transparency renders a visual airiness and artful fascination to Aoyama, making it a compelling anchor in a dining area.

Now led creatively by the couple’s son Jacob Gubi Olsen, Danish brand Gubi was originally founded in 1967 as a vehicle for the modernist furniture designs and textile catalog of husband-and-wife Gubi and Lisbeth Larson. Under Jacob’s watch, the company added a global focus to its roots in Copenhagen with a cosmopolitan array of furniture, lighting and interior objects. Alongside standouts from the 20th century, he has introduced a new generation of designers from companies such as GamFratesi, Space Copenhagen and OeO Studio.

“I started out with two very strong designs, Bestlite—a Bauhaus collection designed in 1930—and Gubi Chair, designed in 2003” Jacob says (both available at A+R). “I felt they had something in common,” he continues. “Iconic appearance, functional design, high quality, aesthetic design language and adaptable for many different kinds of interiors. I took these values as a guideline for any new designs added to the collection ever since.”
