Description

Taking a light-hearted spin, this coat rack from Norwegian studio Gridy was inspired by the mini players of a table football game. Play is both decorative and useful, featuring the natural grain of the wood as an essential part of the design, available in a variety of color-ways. Easy to mount and with a spot for each member of the household to hold jackets, hats and scarves, the rounded pegs are also reassuringly gentle on clothes.

Brand

Normann Copenhagen

“When Jan and I look at new designs for Normann Copenhagen, we take a very intuitive approach to the products,” according to cofounder Poul Madsen. “A picture can say much more than words and if we are both struck by what we see, we are interested.” Jan Andersen and Poul Madsen teamed up to create the Normann Copenhagen with a vision to shake up the contemporary design field. Now known the world over, they collaborate with new names and established talents from their native Denmark as well as internationally.

The company puts a premium on challenging conventional thinking in collections of tabletop products, lighting and furniture—with bold design strokes, innovative materials and a deft enjoyment of color. “We like products that have an original idea and a simple design, although we do not tie ourselves to a particular line,” Poul adds. “For us, the important thing is that the projects we get involved in bring something new into the world of design.”

Designer

Gridy

With the unique appellation Gridy—taken from combining their 2 names—these young Oslo-based designers are making their mark with elegantly streamlined designs, always delivered with a defining wink. Gridy, a.k.a. Lars Olav Dybdal and Wilhelm Grieg Teisner, first connected as undergrads at the Bergen Academy of Arts and Design. Lars Olav followed up with a master's degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen while Wilhelm gained his from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

Specializing in furniture, product and spatial design, the designers say they draw their working inspiration from everyday life, with the aim to create simple, functional solutions with a strong personality. In the process, they've been recognized at several international design shows. Lars Olav perhaps unwittingly summed up their philosophy when he was recently asked who was his childhood hero. The answer? "MacGyver! The way he solved problems by using his creativity and built stuff with what he had at hand."
