Description

In the spirit of creator Nisse Strinning's innovative spin on shelving, String's design heirs have introduced a range of multi-use add-ons that are every bit as minimal and light in profile as they are impactful in functionality as Nisse's original bookshelf of 1949.

Made from an easy-to-clean ABS plastic, the trio bowl shelf can serve as a container for everything from toys to jewelry to art supplies to living plants. Layer the felt liner on top, or use solo for objects that require a softer touch. Pairs with String panels that are 30cm deep.

Organizers, made or a robust plastic and available in a pack of 3 as pictured, are equally as versatile in a String configuration. Sort writing utensils at a desk; hold toothbrushes off a String unit in the bathroom; or keep paint brushes at the ready in an art studio. The metal Magazine Rack holds a few magazines or, at Casa A+R, several piano books on a String bookshelf next to the piano.

Metal hooks can go from kitchen (hanging utensils or pots) to wardrobe (necklaces, belts or bags). To be paired with the perforated metal shelves by String. Hooks come in a set of 5.

The circular plastic String Bowl is a playful catch-all for use with the height-adjusting String Works Desk.

Explore the rest of the complementary extras of this most modular of shelving systems—from felted desk panels and glass-door vitrines to filing cabinets and slanted shoe shelves—both online and in the downtown LA showroom of A+R.

Since its launch as a simple bookcase in 1949, the late Nisse Strinning's enduring String System is the manifestation of renowned Scandinavian sensibility, a modular system so intelligently configured that to call it customizable only hints at the possibilities.

String

When a Swedish publisher held a bookshelf design competition in 1946, there was no way of knowing the result would become one of the most iconic concepts of the 20th Century. Bonnier wanted to jump-start sales of its books in the postwar economy but realized customers would need a place to store them at home. The winner, out of 194 entries in all, was Nils Strinnings (with an assist from his designer wife, Kajsa) and his system named String.

Based on a ladder-like, coated-wire framework, it was lightweight, versatile and redoubtably stable. Not to mention quick to assemble, easy to reposition and little trouble to transport. String was an immediate success far and wide—especially with a newly identifiable younger generation. Just a few years later, in 1950, the shelves were even ordered for the new UN headquarters in New York. String continues to produce the timeless original designs as well as updated versions for both residential and office spaces.
