In 1962, Karimoku built its first in-house chair — a compact, rubber tree–framed lounge seat sold as contract furniture for ryokans and small businesses across Japan. It never left production. Forty years later, designer Kenmei Nagaoka brought it to the general public through the 60VISION project, a cross-industry revival of Japanese companies' founding products, and Karimoku 60 was born. The two-seater is the wider expression of that original chair: the same low silhouette, the same honest frame, the same parts-based assembly that lets you replace a cushion or an armrest rather than the whole thing. There is nothing nostalgic about the intent — Karimoku calls it long-life design, and the chair earns that claim by still being made, and still being repaired, the same way it always was.
