Designer Oscar Coakley takes a Brutalist turn with his Z-shaped steel side table —raw, heavy and unyielding. Heat-treated to create the form, Kvara has a natural finish with noticeable temper marks, fashioned from 300mm-wide flat bar mild steel, a material ordinarily cut and welded to be part of a much bigger civil engineering structure. Working with industrial fabricators in Hull, UK, the piece is pressed and folded with crude, yet beautiful tooling via machines which have barely changed since the industrial revolution.
