With its unique structure, Strand provides both diffused lighting and, in this variation, generous downward illumination that's especially apropos over a table. Award-winning British designer Benjamin Hubert conceives a unique pendant with a sprayed cocoon material over the pared-down steel form. The cocoon material's tiny strands coalesce into an intriguing surface while filtering the light for a warm, welcoming glow.

Muuto made its impact on the design world by living up to its namesake "muttos,” the Finnish word that alludes to looking at things with a new perspective. "We give the designers the freedom to create new designs,” says co-founder Peter Bonnén. By giving free rein to the brightest design talent in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark, there’s the breathing room to conjure a new take on a chair, vase or a lamp. Expanding on that success, Muuto was subsequently acquired by legendary brand Knoll In 2017, though it continues to be run independently from the company's headquarters in Copenhagen.
Peter and co-founder Kristian Byrge, who originally trained in economics and management respectively, might not have seemed destined to helm a new-influencer design firm. But it was a shared passion for all things design and and the distinctive style they dubbed “New Nordic” that rapidly brought worldwide recognition. "It serves as proof that we have something special to offer the design industry," the partners say. "We're proud to be part of the Knoll family and can't wait to unfold Muuto's global potential further in close collaboration with them."
"Robust" is a favorite word of UK-born designer Benjamin Hubert when describing his eponymous firm's approach to furniture, lighting and accessory design. His team includes industrial designers, researchers and engineers, all focused on innovating with materials and strategies. That's led to Benjamin Hubert Ltd. collaborating with a roster of international brands from Europe to Asia and Australia to Brazil and the US. "We're a small studio, a young studio—but there's quite a lot of knowledge here," he says.
Educated at Loughborough University with a degree in Industrial Design and Technology, Benjamin first gained notice upon graduation at the New Designers '06 exhibit. Several honors followed, including 2 Red Dot citations, Design of the Year (British Design Awards) and Best Product (Blueprint Magazine 100% Design.) Perhaps such success stems from a regard for the rigor of his process: "If you give somebody a set of constraints, you push the limits."
